Wiley,
Modern life has left me feeling empty and lost. Is there anything I can do to return a sense of place and meaning to my life?
” People live perpetually in the shadow of the beyond, and it is a new more terrifying beyond, a beyond without reference points, and no stars anywhere, no tools of navigation, no Enlightenment reason, and the true self, where is that to be found? We have intimations that we are merely collections (fragments?) of selves, selves strewn across a terrifying, secularised cosmos. People exist, routinely, on the edge of the abyss – they no longer contemplate madness as a hobby, they fend it off, they are in a state of denial – the ennui cycle works less effectively, or is it overworked? It requires input, dedication from the subject – and so the addictions are more frantic, and the fantasies of this new phase are nearer the surface, they are the fantasies of schizophrenics, sadists, masochists and psychopaths (serial or random killers, cult leaders, terrorists, sex killers, rapists on a grand scale) – people are fearful that one day in an unguarded moment the sacrificial impulses of the ennui cycle may swamp consciousness – and then what?”
PS. Are you a Pauly Shore fan?
I hate that guy.
Dear LaLa-
That is the name of one of my favorite chicken salads- The LaLa Salad at this Argentinian place on Melrose. Everyone in Lala is a chicken. Stop being another one.
So what of the fantasies of schizophrenics and other crazies? They are the stuff of good writing.
And yes, I do like Pauly Shore because I empathize with his masochistic tendencies. I saw him standing alone one night at this fancy office park that was rented out for one of those shi-shi Xenii parties. Lukas Haas was trashed and trying to feel me up. Paulie, the Wease, stood alone like a brunette Carrot Top, but not as killer clown looking. I feel for the guy.
He is like you- just trying to add meaning to his life, observing the flux of it.
My suggestions that follow are for both of you, if he is indeed reading this-
Try what Harmony Korine did- pick fights with people and film it, and then reflect on how you hurt them.
Try designing your own cross-stitch patterns with meaningful sayings. I hear that is what all the gals are doing while they’re getting their hair done for the Paris run-way cat walks. There’s going to be this new release of cross stitching with models videos out after the October shows for the Spring 2009 collections. Who can call them vapid anymore, eh?
Since your question is a chunky, convoluted one, I’ll think on it some more and get back to you.
